FAQ’S

Frequently Asked Questions

Our clients often have questions about family law, adoption, dependency cases, and Guardian ad Litem services, so we’ve compiled answers to the most common inquiries to help you better understand these legal processes and what to expect when working with our firm.

Meister Law Group focuses on child-centered family law matters including adoption law (contested and private adoptions, termination of parental rights), dependency law (representing parents and families in DCF cases), Guardian ad Litem services (court-appointed child advocacy), and family law matters involving children (custody disputes, parenting plans, high-conflict cases). We concentrate our practice on cases where children’s welfare is the primary concern, rather than handling general divorce or property matters.

Legal fees vary significantly based on the type and complexity of your case. We provide transparent fee structures during initial consultations and discuss payment options available to families. Some cases may qualify for hourly billing while others work better with flat fee arrangements. During your consultation, we’ll explain all costs associated with your specific situation and help you understand what to expect financially throughout the legal process.

Case timelines vary greatly depending on the type of proceeding and whether issues are contested. Uncontested adoptions and straightforward custody matters may resolve within 3-6 months, while contested cases can extend 12-18 months or longer. Dependency cases typically move toward resolution within 12 months under Florida law, though complex situations may take longer. We’ll provide realistic timeline estimates based on your specific circumstances during your consultation.
While Florida law doesn’t require attorneys in all family law matters, having experienced legal representation is strongly recommended, especially in cases involving children. Adoption cases require specific legal procedures and documentation that must be completed correctly. Dependency cases involve constitutional rights that require protection. Family law matters affecting children benefit from attorneys who understand how courts make decisions about children’s best interests. The complexity of these cases makes professional guidance valuable for protecting your rights and achieving positive outcomes.
Bring any relevant court documents, correspondence from DCF or other agencies, police reports, medical records related to your case, financial information if support is involved, and a list of questions about your situation. For adoption cases, bring information about all parties involved and any previous legal proceedings. The more information you can provide, the better we can assess your situation and provide helpful guidance during the consultation.
While our office is located in Riverview and we primarily serve Southshore families, we can represent clients throughout Florida in appropriate cases. Family law and adoption matters often require appearances in multiple counties, and we’re licensed to practice throughout the state. During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether representation in your specific location and court system is feasible for your case.

Jennifer Meister’s unique background as a former DCF prosecutor and Assistant Attorney General provides valuable insight into how state agencies and courts operate in child welfare cases. Our concentrated focus on child-centered legal matters means we understand the specific factors courts consider in these cases. We provide personal attention with Jennifer handling cases directly rather than delegating to junior attorneys, and our community connections in Southshore help us better serve local families.

Courts typically appoint Guardian ad Litem attorneys in high-conflict custody cases, when abuse or neglect allegations arise, in relocation disputes, or when children have special needs requiring particular consideration. If parents strongly disagree about what’s best for their children, if there are safety concerns, or if the case involves complex family dynamics, a GAL appointment may benefit the proceedings by providing independent investigation and child-focused recommendations to the court.

Florida provides a 3-business-day revocation period after birth parents sign consent documents, during which they can change their minds without needing legal grounds. After this period expires, consent can only be withdrawn by proving fraud, duress, or mistake in court, which is very difficult to establish. This protection provides security for adoptive families while respecting birth parents’ rights during the immediate period after consent.

Florida courts use the “best interest of the child” standard, considering factors including each parent’s ability to provide stability, the child’s relationship with each parent, moral fitness, willingness to encourage relationships with the other parent, the child’s home and school record, and age-appropriate preferences. Courts also evaluate each parent’s ability to communicate and cooperate in child-related matters and any history of domestic violence or substance abuse that might affect the child’s welfare.

Focus on demonstrating your commitment to your children’s best interests through your actions and decisions. Keep detailed records of your involvement in your children’s lives, complete any court-ordered requirements promptly, maintain stable housing and employment, and avoid actions that could be viewed negatively by the court. Follow all existing court orders precisely, communicate respectfully with the other parent when possible, and work closely with your attorney to understand court expectations and prepare for hearings effectively.
